Prep78

The new issue of Prep School magazine is out now for the new term.

Copies will soon be arriving with schools and subscribers and you can read the e-zine at the magazine’s new website at www.prepschoolmag.co.uk.

The autumn issue has a theme of ‘Embracing the challenges’ and looks at enrichment, sustainability, school trips and ‘gifted and talented’.

Here’s editor Michele Kitto’s introduction to the new issue:

“The summer holidays often give us a chance to take stock, switch off and catch up with all the things that get pushed out during a busy term. As school starts again, our greatest challenge can be to retain that work–life balance. Shall we see if we can all continue with just one of the activities we discovered – or rediscovered – over the summer?

“Some of you will be the new girl or boy in the staffroom this term. Or maybe you are mentoring an NQT, welcoming an experienced teacher to your team, or adjusting to life with a new Head teacher? Change goes hand-in-hand with the start of the new academic year and, even if none of the above applies, you cannot help seeing your curriculum with refreshed eyes after the summer break. In which case, I hope the articles on citizenship and sustainability might inspire you to try to weave these very relevant subjects into your teaching.

“How many of us speak from the same ‘script’, year after year? Somehow, those tried and tested lesson plans resurface over and over again, unchanged. They are familiar and reassuring; tried and tested. They are not broken; they do not need fixing. Well, maybe. On the other hand, when we teach something new, or in a different way, we often find we perform right at the top of our game. Energy and enthusiasm are our greatest teaching aids and most of us will have seen the effect that a new approach can bring to the classroom. Admittedly, it takes time and inspiration to make changes to our teaching but the results are very worthwhile. Regretfully, Prep School is unable to create more hours in the day but we really do try to help with the inspiration side of things.

“With the diversity and depth of education that our sector offers, it is very easy to forget that our job is to enrich the educational experience of all our pupils, not just the ‘gifted and talented’. In this issue, you will find a SEN feature and Q&A column, as well as articles on enrichment and GT so you can do just this. While parents and pupils struggle to accept that not everyone can be in the top 10 per cent, we need to remember that education is about finding out what each child does best, stretching them in the areas they find easy, and supporting with the things they find hard. Moving mountains and transfiguration are not yet on the curriculum but preparing children for their future lives is the absolute basis of our work.

“Don’t forget to celebrate the wonderful work you are doing in your school by keeping in touch, as so many of you do.”

If you would like to contribute to Prep School, you can contact Michele at editor@prepschoolmag.co.uk.

Prep77

The summer issue of Prep School magazine is available now – in print and online.

The magazine, produced in partnership with SATIPS (Support and Training in Prep Schools), will be arriving with schools and subscribers this week.

You can also read it online here: www.prepschoolmag.co.uk

This issue has a focus on ICT and encourages schools to use the summer term to consider the challenges that lie ahead.

In her welcome notes, editor Michele Kitto writes: “Now is an excellent time to look at the demands of the curriculum and to build in new experiences. The sustainability article (by Robin Davies, Barfield School) shares the sorts of discussions we should be having about how we can embed this philosophy into our schools. Or maybe it is time to go all iPad, or Google? What about developing a digital curriculum? Is it time to look again at your pupils’ emotional needs? How about doing something different to help the move from junior to senior school? Can phonics teaching be spiced up? Perhaps puppets could help in the classroom? Is handwriting being neglected?

“This issue is packed full of ideas to get your staffroom talking and thinking: use it to plan next year’s educational journey. On this journey you may need to change route or double back on yourself. You’ll almost certainly need to take detours – and the odd risk. I am afraid your satnav won’t work. But the view when you get there will be fantastic.”

Prep School is published three times a year. Potential contributors can contact editor Michèle Kitto at editor@prepschoolmag.co.uk while advertisers can get in touch with Madeleine Anderson at manderson@johncatt.com.

Prep76

The spring issue of Prep School magazine is out now – and available to read as an e-zine.

We’ve given the magazine a fresh look for its 76th issue, which we think does justice to the lively and innovative feel of this popular and enduring publication.

Printed copies should be arriving in staff rooms and with subscribers this week.

This term the focus is on the future of boarding in the 21st century. Jonty Butler, House Master at Cheam School, looks at how boarding will continue to survive – and what the future might hold for pupils, parents, staff and facilities. The spotlight also falls on Sedbergh Junior School, where Headmaster Scott Carnochan outlines the benefits of a boarding education.

The new issue also looks at what ‘value added’ actually means, and features a look at the provision of sport and physical education in prep schools.

To read the issue online, go to www.prepschoolmag.co.uk

Prep School is published three times a year. Potential contributors can contact editor Michèle Kitto at editor@prepschoolmag.co.uk while advertisers can get in touch with Madeleine Anderson at manderson@johncatt.com.

We are beginning to put together John Catt’s Preparatory Schools 2013 – the leading guide to the UK’s prep and junior schools, which will be published in February.

The guide features details of more than 1500 independent preparatory and junior schools providing education for two-and-a-half to 13-year-olds.

We were very pleased at the success of the 2012 edition, which saw an increasing number of schools opt to take out an enhance profile to showcase the quality of their education.

It also featured editorial including a foreword by Tim Johns, the 2011/12 chair of the Independent Association of Preparatory Schools (IAPS) and an excellent article by Gyles Morris, of Naturesbase, on how learning is enhanced by the great outdoors.

If you would like to get involved with the 2013 edition, please contact me on jonathanbarnes@johncatt.com or 01394 389859 regarding editorial or my colleague Peter Mitchell on pmitchell@johncatt.com or 01394 389853 if you are interested in exploring options for your school.
