9781909717343We are delighted to announce the publication of the first book of a very exciting new series exploring the ‘invisible’ areas of the curriculum.

Teaching for Character is the first book in the seven-part Invisible Ink series, in conjunction with INK Education, the CPD company founded by John Catt and author Andrew Hammond.

Andrew is an educational consultant, trainer, conference speaker, former headteacher and author of more than 30 educational titles for major publishers.

His new book argues that character education is an essential tool for creating a positive learning environment and getting the best out of students.

It offers practical advice to help encourage grit, adaptability, optimism, self-control, empathy, discernment and trust in young learners – important foundations in any future success in and out of school. While doing so, it references the Government’s Teachers’ Standards report, and shows how teachers can meet the requirements the expected of them.

The Invisible Ink series aims to shed light on this ‘Invisible Curriculum’ and the secret ingredients that really unlock a child’s potential. It will be followed by Teaching for Creativity in June and Teaching for Curiosity and Teaching for Motivation in the autumn term.

We’ve been thrilled at the early feedback and sales for this title. The foreword is written by Max Coates, senior lecturer in education at the UCL Institute of Eudcation. We extracted the following quote for the cover:

“This book ought to be mandatory reading for all who want to nurture the thinking and learning of children and young people. Andrew, thank you for writing this book – it is beyond being timely.”

Teaching for Character can be ordered from the John Catt Bookshop: http://www.johncattbookshop.com/teaching-for-character

We are delighted to announce the forthcoming publication of the first book in a new series presenting William Shakespeare’s greatest plays as one-hour performance scripts.

The first volume of Hour-Long Shakespeare features Henry IV (Part), Henry V and Richard III will be published on June 19.

The plays have abridged by Matthew Jenkinson, director of studies at New College School in Oxford into one-hour performance scripts that will be of particular interest to teachers and students of English and drama.

The scripts maintain the arcs of Shakespeare’s plots without compromising the integrity of his original language. What remains are manageable performance texts and the essential elements needed for an introduction to three of Shakespeare’s most popular plays.

The second volume, due for publication in September, will look at Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth and Julius Caesar.

We were delighted to receive this testimonial from Professor Michael Dobson, Director of the Shakespeare Institute and Professor of Shakespeare Studies at the University of Birmingham:

“Matthew Jenkinson’s careful alterations of some of Shakespeare’s most important history plays may give us less than 50% of each play’s lines, but they convey far more than that percentage of each play’s theatrical power. Moreover, they belong 100% to the highest traditions of both teaching and performing Shakespeare’s plays.”

The first volume can be pre-ordered through our online bookshop at http://www.johncattbookshop.com/hour-long-shakespeare-henry-iv-part-1-henry-v-and-richard-iii

Playful Pedagogies

Playful Pedagogies: Young children learning in international and multicultural contexts is a new John Catt publication in partnership with The Council of British International Schools (COBIS)

In the 21st century what the future holds for young learners is unclear, what is clear is that they need to be confident, capable and resilient. As wider communication about education is increasing there is a developing understanding that children in settings across the globe learn in the same ways and have the same needs.

This book considers international and multicultural learning environments from both theoretical and practical perspectives, written by specialists in early years education in the UK and in international contexts.

The theoretical perspectives are supported by eight case studies, from Uganda, Indonesia, Mexico, Qatar, Netherlands, Italy, the United Kingdom and Romania.

The book is edited by Dr Anna Cox and Dr Estelle Tarry. Dr Anna Cox is the Programme Leader for a Postgraduate Certificate in Early Years Education (QTS) at the University of Northampton, where she is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Education.

Dr Estelle Tarry is a Senior Lecturer in Education at the University of Northampton and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Playful Pedagogies will be published on the 25th May, and is available to pre-order now for £13

World Student Issue 2

The second issue of World Student magazine has been released! After the success of issue one, World Student is back with more inspiring articles that are influenced by international students, their opinions and their interests.

When we launched the very first issue of World Student last year, we wanted to produce a magazine aimed specifically at students in international schools around the world; a magazine that can inspire students to think ambitiously and positively about their future. We also wanted to provide them with a platform to share their views and opinions with other young global citizens.
We are therefore delighted that this second issue features more articles written by students from all corners of the globe, and would like to thank them for taking the time out of their busy exam schedules to share their views.

The second issue also welcomes a new editor, Samantha Wilkins, who along with the World Student team has delivered a wave of new regular features and created engaging competitions and social media opportunities for students to get involved in.

World Student magazine is available in print, online and via the World Student magazine app. We are happy to send out additional print copies free of charge (postage charges apply) to schools for students to read. Copies can be ordered at www.johncattbookshop.com/magazines/world-student The magazine is available to view free online at www.world-student.com and is free to download on Google Play and the App Store, simply search ‘World Student magazine’.

World Student is created in partnership with COBIS, we would like to thank Colin Bell and his team for their continued support and partnership. Thank you also to students, alumni, teachers, international officers and organisations who have contributed to the creation of the second issue.

World Student is published termly, but we’re on twitter all year round – so feel free to tweet us @WorldStudentMag with your thoughts on this issue, and let us know what you’d like to see in future issues.
