Utopia

The regional conference of the International Baccalaureate in The Hague at the weekend saw the launch of Glimpses of Utopia, the new book by George Walker, former director general of the IB.

In this collection of autobiographical essays, the author describes some defining moments in his distinguished career in education.

In schools, of course, but also in the harvest fields of Essex and the Paleolithic cave at Lascaux; behind the Iron Curtain in Czechoslovakia; on the alpine ski slopes;  in the concert hall and in the footsteps of Cecil Rhodes in southern Africa; in Baghdad and in Bosnia, there have been many unexpected lessons to learn.

As the author explains in his preface: “My purpose is to prompt debate rather than to programme action and the reader is invited to engage with the vignettes rather like an art lover might move between the pictures in an exhibition.”

George Walker was director general of the IB from 1999 to 2006 and was also visiting professor at the University of Bath.
