This Thursday will see Jonathan Evans and I fly out to Vienna for the annual Leadership Conference for the European Council of International Schools (ECIS).

The theme of the conference is Forming the Future with the opening keynote speaker being Andy Hargreaves, who will be talking about his 2009 publication The Fourth Way, a provocative volume which makes clear that the old ways for effecting social and educational change are no longer suited to the “fast, flexible, and vulnerable new world of the 21st century”.

In addition to keeping abreast of the latest thoughts and developments in international education, Jonathan and I will also be promoting the latest book in the ever-popular Effective International School series, published in partnership with ECIS.

Effective Data Management for Schools, the 11th book in the series, was published just last week and is edited by David Willows (Director of External Relations at the International School of Brussels, Belgium) and Brian Bedrick (Managing Director of Interactive Data Partners).

Over recent years, international schools around the world have begun to recognize the importance of effectively managing data in their schools. This book is intended to capture a range of key ideas and useful data resources in a practical, thoughtful, jargon-free guide. It covers topics as diverse as targets, surveys, and key performance indicators on the one hand, to assessment of learning and student achievement on the other.

“Finally, international educators weigh-in and offer some astute insight on the data dilemma – an issue that has swung from dream to conundrum.  From the philosophical to the practical, Willows and Bedrick pull together an essential ‘data’ must-read.”
Bambi Betts, CEO Academy for International School Heads and Director, Principals’ Training Center
