Our publishing director, Derek Bingham, has just returned (with thanks to those staff at British Airways who remained at their posts and did an excellent job) after four days in Singapore at the International Baccalaureate (IB) Asia Pacific Conference.

John Catt Educational has an excellent relationship with the IB; we are in our fifth year of publishing the IB World Schools Yearbook, the official guide to all schools offering the IB Programmes. We have also published four series of lectures from former IB director general Professor George Walker.  Going to these conferences is important to us to help strengthen our bond with organisations and promote our joint publications to delegates.

Here are a few of Derek’s impressions of the conference:

‘Singapore, as well as being a stunning and lively city, is a melting pot in more senses than one (hurrah for air conditioning). It forms the hub of a region reflecting a variety of cultures, outlooks and religions; lingering strains of empire and missionary ties; third world countries, old kingdoms, new democracies and sophisticated lifestyles driven by fantastic economic growth.

‘This is the 24th annual regional conference and there has been a growing attendance at each of them. Of the 389 schools in 27 countries in the IB’s Asia Pacific region, 320 sent more than 730 delegates between them. To look after them, the IB sent more than 70 of their staff.

‘The exhibitors were all extremely busy and there was always interest in John Catt Educational. In part this may been due to a constant supply of tea, coffee and scrumptious eats in the two exhibitors’ halls, and a magnificent buffet lunch each day.

‘Some delegates knew us by reputation, but even among those who didn’t there was gratitude that we’d come so far to attend and there was a steady sale of books and orders placed. In all this was an excellent and lively conference, and reflects well the enthusiasm for the IB and its programmes.’

So, all in all, it seems to have been an interesting and useful trip for John Catt Educational. Our assistant editor Alex will be attending the IB Conference of the Americas in Miami in July to reinforce further our support for the IB: feel free to pop over and say hello should you also be in attendance.
